CitySense: Air Quality and Noise Sensors

The CitySense system by Mavi Alp includes two smart sensor devices: CitySense Noise and CitySense Air. CitySense Noise measures sound levels in the environment, while CitySense Air monitors air quality. These devices are designed to be easy to install and provide real-time environmental data.

Key Functions and Features:

The CitySense project is currently being used in Ortahisar, one of the busiest areas in Trabzon. This system helps monitor two important environmental factors: noise pollution and air pollution. CitySense Noise tracks the sound levels throughout the day, helping to understand how traffic, construction, or other activities affect the area. CitySense Air checks the air for harmful particles and gases, giving a clear view of the air quality that people are breathing. Both sensors send real-time data, which can be used by city planners, environmental experts, and local authorities to improve public health and city planning. By using this technology, Trabzon is taking steps toward becoming a smarter and more livable city.

Products Features

1. CitySense Air - Air Quality Sensor

A comprehensive sensor node for real-time monitoring of ambient air quality.

Hardware Specifications

Primary Sensor: Sensirion® SEN55-SDN-T environmental sensor node. This all-in-one module accurately measures:

  • Particulate Matter (PM1.0, PM2.5, PM4, PM10)
  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC Index)
  • Ambient Temperature (T)
  • Relative Humidity (RH)
  • Nitrogen Oxides (NOx)

Wireless Communication: Equipped with a Mahmote 2.4Ghz RF Module for robust and long-range wireless data transmission.
Internal Interface: A high-speed SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface) bus is used for fast and reliable data communication between the main processor and the RF module.
Enclosure: Housed in a durable, IP-rated weatherproof enclosure designed to protect internal components from dust, rain, and other environmental factors.

Software Specifications

Firmware: Custom-developed embedded firmware optimized for low-power consumption and high reliability, ensuring long operational life in the field.
Data Acquisition: The firmware manages the complete data acquisition cycle from the Sensirion SEN55 module, processing all five environmental parameters.
Communication Protocol: Implements a proprietary 2.4GHz wireless communication protocol for secure and efficient data transmission to a central gateway or cloud platform.

General Product Features

  • Provides comprehensive, multi-parameter air quality data in real-time.
  • Wireless and self-contained design allows for flexible deployment and easy installation on poles, walls, or other urban infrastructure.
  • Ideal for smart city applications, environmental compliance monitoring, and academic research.
  • Designed for long-term, low-maintenance operation.

2. CitySense Noise - Noise Sensor

A dedicated sensor for measuring and analyzing ambient sound levels.

Hardware Specifications

Primary Sensor: A high-sensitivity sound sensor module, engineered for accurate detection of ambient sound pressure levels.
Wireless Communication: Features a Mahmote 2.4Ghz RF Module to ensure seamless wireless connectivity with the CitySense network.
Internal Interface: Utilizes the Modbus industrial communication protocol for structured and error-checked data exchange between the sound sensor and the main processing unit.
Microphone: Includes an external microphone protected by a foam windshield to reduce wind interference and capture precise audio level readings.
Enclosure: Deployed in the same robust, IP-rated weatherproof enclosure as the rest of the CitySense family, ensuring operational stability in harsh weather conditions.

Software Specifications

Firmware: Custom firmware that runs a Modbus master implementation to reliably poll the noise sensor for data at configured intervals.
Data Processing: Onboard software processes raw sensor readings into standardized noise metrics (e.g., A-weighted decibels, dBA).
Communication Protocol: Utilizes the same proprietary 2.4GHz wireless protocol to transmit data, allowing for easy integration into a mixed network of CitySense devices.

General Product Features

  • Enables real-time monitoring of noise pollution in urban environments, near construction sites, industrial zones, and residential areas.
  • The robust hardware and external microphone design provide accurate and dependable data.
  • Key tool for urban planners, public health officials, and law enforcement agencies for managing noise levels.
  • Simple to deploy and integrate into a wider smart city sensor network.
